Thanks Dave,

The file wouldn't duplicate it gave me "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "09 Machete.mp3" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)" so I trashed it. Then disconnected all but the target device and booted into safe mode, tried to clone again and it failed on the same file - this time in the trash - duh! I should have emptied the trash. Did that and it worked fine.
