Oh, yes it would -- because option-boot gives you a boot menu, and it sounds like it never was able to interrogate all the attached devices.
What partition scheme is the external drive using?

OK, but what scheme -- start Disk Utility, select the drive and look at the bottom right of the window...

Boot from FireWire HD
I don't really see any info at the bootom right of the window, but one bit of info in the right of the window is "Format: HFS+". Is that what you need, I hope?

Sounds like you might be looking at the volume rather than the drive. Click the drive and you should see a lot of information about it, including the partition scheme.

Boot from FireWire HD
Disk description: PL3507 Combo Device
Disk write status: read/write All partitions are MacOS Extended. Drive is an Edge HD-02-U2FW. I did try option-boot, left the house for 2.5 hours, and got the same results as b4. I'd been under the impression that any FW drive could be made bootable under OS X, but some digging around online is leading me to question this. Could it be that I just happened to get a drive that can't be made bootable? Thanks. |

I just may have my answer here

The drive in question is indeed an Edge Tech DiskGo of less than 400GB. |

Yes -- Initio and Prolific bridge chipsets are definitely problematic, but I wasn't going to go there until we'd eliminated other possibilities... (we still don't know the partition scheme). But, yes -- that drive might be incompatible with Mac boot.
