Hi Dave
I have been using Smart Update. Per your suggestion: via the Finder, I renamed the cloned HD to the same name as my internal HD. Restarted the computer, holding down the option key, and selected the clone (tricky figuring out which one was the clone as both now have the same name). Spinning gears and nothing else. Powered off/restarted to the internal - no problem restarting.
