From 12 min to 22 min for the same clone?!
Hi!
I'm on a Powerbook G4 1.5 15", 1.5 GB RAM mostly, an iMac G5 also being backed up sometimes. Editing just to say that I'm on the latest update of Tiger. I'm cloning my Powerbook's internal HD to a Lacie Portable 160Gb every day, using the Smart Update option. My backups took usualy between 10-12 minutes. All of a sudden it took SD 21 - 22 minutes for the same task and I haven't changed anything bigger on my Mac. I haven't installed any new software, I moved some films (some 10 GB) to another external drive but I haven't checked how long the backup directly after that took. Maybe that's the reason? But now the CD should have got used to the new size of my internal drive and maybe go back to 11-12 minutes? This is just for the curiosity, I don't mind it taking some more time as long as everything is working OK. I've read in some of the posts around here that somebody needed to reboot in order to get rid of the temporary files, does a reboot do that job? I've tried to use the CleanApp (by the way, any thoughts about this software?) and clean the catches, but it doesn't seem to take away too much. None of the catche folderws get really empty when the program shows a list of them. Ouwgh.... Thanks! |

It's possible that your destination or source has become more fragmented and is now performing differently: has the amount of data that's being copied gone up?

I've done a clone this morning and it took ca 16 minutes. Yes, I've installed iWork08 trial, I know it must have been a 300-400 MB install.
Would you recommend to follow your advice earlier in another thread - to repair the internal driv You wrote: "Please boot from your OSX Install Disc and run Disk Utility from the Installer or Utilities menu (the bold one that says "Installer" next to the Apple menu at the top of the screen, or the Utilities menu, depending on the version of the disc). Then, use the First Aid tab to repair the drive, using the buttons on the right (NOT Repair Permissions on the left). Repeat until no problems are found, then try again." Thanks very much. |

No, I wouldn't: I don't think the volume is damaged.

Thank you Dave. I've just booted from the clone without problems so I asume everything is OK :-)

One thing you might check is whether other programs or processes are running during the SuperDuper backup.
When I run SuperDuper to backup my daughter's iMac, she tells me not to close any programs that are running. These programs are generally sitting "idle," but certain ones (such as Firefox, Microsoft Word) can consume 50% or more of the cpu even when "idle,", depending on a number of variables. I've seen SuperDuper runs take twice as long due to other programs making only 50% (or less) of the cpu available to SuperDuper. You can watch for this sort of thing by watching the Activity Monitor before running SuperDuper and then also during the time that SuperDuper is running. When other processes are running, SuperDuper takes longer. |
