SD hangs in the middle of backup
I've been using SD successfully for several years now but I've begun to have a problem with SD hanging during a backup. I think my backups have been problematic since I installed Leopard but I can't exclude the Maxtor One Touch 500 GB as a possibility for my troubles. The backup usually starts fine but the progress bar will stop, usually about 3/4 of the way done. I start in the evening and find it like this in the morning. Although the G5 is still usable, I have to reboot to dismount the Maxtor. I have no specific reason to think it is the Maxtor drive, except that I couldn't get the FW ports to work with the G5 and had to resort to the USB 2.0 port. The Maxtor has done many successful backups.

That sounds like the backup drive is failing on FireWire, yes. Just to be certain of what you're saying -- it works with USB?

The backup has worked on USB for over one year.

Definitely sounds like you have FireWire port/drive/cable issues, then...
