more newbie questions -- concerning superduper and parallels
we use the parallels software for our work -- and wondered how I can restore that if I've also backed that up on my external HD and add it to my new HD on my macbook

As long as you're not using a BootCamp partition, we copy the Parallels image file along with the rest of your data when you back up. Nothing special need be done, but don't run Parallels or VMWare while backing up.
