New user advice...

Hi all, I'm new to imac and have just got my 24" system up and running.

It has a 500GB internal hard drive and I just purchased a WD 500GB USB2.0 External drive. Everywhere I look SuperDuper! is recommended so I've ended up here!

My primary use is digital photography. My initial testing has been d/l the images from the CF card onto the internal HD and have lightroom reference them there.

What is a "common" or "accepted" strategy to both a) have a bootable system back up and b) store my images. SHould I (how can I?) have partiioned my internal drive to some sort of system drive and a media drive (?), then would I (how do I) do the same on the External HD and clone both internal partitions?

I'm totally new to all this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest Regards
DWBell

In general, I don't find it necessary to isolate system from data, so I don't partition for those reasons. If you're trying to keep some files "archived" so you can delete them, then you need somewhere to keep them (and don't forget that they're valuable too, and thus should be backed up)...

The basic rule is that you need a volume(partition) as a destination for each source you want to back up, and that volume should be used exclusively for that purpose.

Thanks for the quick feedback.

So in my case I should use SuperDuper to create a bootable clone of the internal HD on the External HD. This would be just that, a clone. Then at my yearly archive point I would, as normal burn my archive to DVD, at least once, store in different locations and that's that?

Buying the uprated version od SuperDUper will add scheduler to the system, meaning once set up and installed I do nothing until my yearly archive come around?

(Oh, before you say it, I back up my CF card negatives to DVD on import too, so when I start working on them they are on DVD, on Internal HD and cloned to External HD)

Thanks again, what customer service! (And I'm not a customer yet!)

Yes, that's about it! And registering does unlock scheduled copies.

Well thanks again for the advice and response Dave.

I have since got home from work, created my first bootable full clone backup onto the 500Gb external drive and purchased a registration key.

Doing it was a walk in the park, excellent handbook, very strightforward, easy to follow. Like I said, new to mac, new to ext HD even, worked like a dream. Amazing how "secure" it makes you feel to know you have a mirror there should you need it.

Thanks again,
DWBell

Congratulations on taking the first steps! Give Smart Update a try and see how fast that is, too...
