Backup Plan Help

Hey everybody,

I just let my .mac subscription run out and since I no longer have Backup, I decided to use my copy of SuperDuper to take care of my backing up. I guess I didn't pay close enough attention to the directions because I wiped out about 40gb of home movies. Kind of ironic that attempting to be proactive about backup caused me to lose my data.

I would like to back up my entire system to an external firewire drive that I also use for general storage.

Can someone let me know if I can use SuperDuper to clone my HD without overwriting the files that are already on the external drive. I don't want to have to go through losing my data again.

Can I use smart update so that I'm not copying all 120gb of data every few days? (I think using smart update is what got me in trouble in the first place.)

Any advice? Thanks in advance for the help.

ChronoSync

I love SD but use it as a complete system backup/restore tool.

When I want to synchronize just selected folders on my HD to another drive (one not used by SD), I use ChronoSync, which lets you sync one way, two ways, mirror deletes, etc. Lots of options. Won't create a bootable partition though.

Steve,

I should also recommend FileSalvage, shareware that can (hopefully) recover your overwritten home movies. It costs around $90, but I believe the free demo will let you see if recovery is possible before you spend the money.

Wow. Read the user guide before using a piece of software? You're asking a lot.

It recommends using a disk image. It even says that I can Smart Update the disc image. ("...the “virtual” drive looks just like a local disk, and can be backed up to like any other. You can even Smart Update it!...") So following those instructions will mean that my external drive can contain the folders i currently have on there and the disc image? I'll give it another try this evening. I'm nervous, but thanks for the information.
