ASR Image freeze

Every time I try to back up to my LaCie firewire drive Super Duper copies the required files, then enters a mode in which it says it is "creating ASR Image". Once it enters that state it remains there forever - well, for at least 16 hours, which is the longest I've left it. Furthermore, when it's in that mode its clock seems to go haywire, racking up hours in minutes. And after I've quit the process the LaCie drive is no longer visible until I switch it off and on again. I've checked the FAQs and whether it's because I'm entering the wrong question, or whether the problem is unique, I get no matches. Can anybody help? I haven't been able to complete a back-up since my first full transfer to this drive. I'm using a dual 1.6GB Mac G4 and OSX 10.3.6.

Peter:

It sounds to me like, during the rather extensive conversion phase, the drive is having some kind of communication failure. What I'd suggest is doing a less conversion-intensive image as discussed in this FAQ entry:

http://www.shirt-pocket.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81

That'll create a sparse image instead, and -- rather than backing up the whole kit and kaboodle every time -- it'll allow you to Smart Update the previous backup, which'll save you tons of time.

Sound reasonable?

No improvement

I created the sparse disk image as suggested and went through the process again, though choosing the sparse disk image to update, with exactly the same result - 41 minutes later Super Duper told me it was "Preparing Imaging Engine". Should the process be complete within 41 minutes? The repair of disk permissions and file copy phase only lasted about 5 minutes, so a further 36 minutes was spent doing.......?

Peter: do you hare the image option checked in options as well? That should not be selected: the sparse image is treated just like a disk drive. No imaging subsystem should be involved...

No joy

Dear David,
I've done as you suggested. Created a sparse disk image, selected that in the second field for a smart backup and had four failures in a row. Here's the log for the last 2. When I saw the message about the Disk Warrior CD at the end of the 2nd last log I copied Disk Warrior to my other drive and deleted it from the one I'm trying to back up, but that didn't solve the problem. The message seems to be about insufficient space. :

OK: I can see that your sparse image is not nearly large enough to hold your backup:

|04:34:28 PM|Info| Target Drive: /Volumes/BACKUPSPARSEA1, name: BACKUPSPARSEA1, device: /dev/disk4s2 type: hfs, OS: N/A, capacity: 0.10 GB, used: 0.01 GB, directories: 3, files: 2

I'm certain you want to back up more than .10 Gigabytes!

It looks to me like you didn't put enough zeros when you created the image. From this bit of log, it looks like you need at least about 80GB, and I'm guessing you tried to create one with 100 GB.Try adding three more zeros to the size when creating it, as the example shows, and you should be all set.
