Script to archive / version past backups?

Is there a simple way to copy / retain / rename N past image backups as part of a pre backup script?

Specifically, I am trying to keep 12 months of scheduled 1st Saturday User Files backup images that are stored on a network drive.

Scheduling the backup is easy, but I am clueless how to script the copy of the previous ones first. (I figure copies are better so it can be a SmartBackup and not have to recopy everything across the LAN each time.)

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
