Can I use my macbook while SD is doing smartbackup?

Have the following:
Macbook C2D 2 Ghz.
with 250 gig internal HD
Western Digital 1 TB FW/USB external - using FW connection to macbook

Made the initial Sparse image last Aug 2009.
Now doing a Smartbackup with my internal HD to the external one.

My question is.
1. Can I still do my regular websurfing and reading of files in my macbook while SD is doing the smartbackup to the sparse image?
Or should I completely stop everything I do while SD is doing its scheduled backup?

Thanks in advance.
