Multiple errors of kind: "Caught I/O exception(5): Input/output error"

Over the course of about 20GB of copying (backup failed after 20GB of an 80GB backup...see last 2 entries of log) about 30 other files followed a "WARNING-Attempting to copy-Copied" scenario (see log below). Is this normal and could this be why I'm getting a .4MB/sec copy time over a wirelessly attached network drive? (I think the Buffalo LinkStation Pro may be inherently slow as well.) Regarding the last 2 log entries where the backup failed, I added a script to ignore the [[userfolder]/Library/Caches/DEVONagent/Pages]path. Can you confirm this is the proper solution to the backup failure? Thanks for your help.

A side question: Is it OK to use the computer (such as using a word processing program or browsing the internet or watching a quicktime movie) while SuperDuper is running, that is, performing a backup ?

Please don't use your computer until Dave comes back with proper advice! Your log indicates that your disk is about to die, and the more you use it, the messier it's going to get.

Best.

Uh oh. Here's a little more information for Dave if it helps. I have Tech Tool Pro and SmartReporter installed. Both have drive failure warning agents, and neither has given me an alert of imminent drive failure. However, there have been little hints along the way: error -50 "can't write to disk" from time to time; the multilingual gray "must restart now" notification box of death more rarely. Also, my drive has been very full lately and am working on clearing space by archiving to a network drive, hopefully using superduper. Thanks for your help.

It may be too late for SuperDuper, seeing that it's a backup program, and not a recovery tool.

I recommend you backup the important files using Finder copy, do a fresh OS X install making sure to deep format the drive (it will take a while).

Once you're back on a healthy system, using SuperDuper regularly will make it much faster coming back online again, of course.

Best.

This really looks like the destination is failing, not the source. Is there enough free space on the Buffalo?

I'd strongly suggest trying to copy to a local FireWire drive to see if that works properly...

OK. I don't have a firewire drive, but I'm considering using my iPod in disk mode as a destination device to see how well a wired usb storage device will work...on a small (a folder or two) scale, for sake of comparison.

Other than that, I'll use finder copy as you suggested and do a clean install. It's really time anyway. Thanks for your help. You're answering questions and keeping me going, a little outside your domain (of SuperDuper). I've heard good things about your tech sup. Clearly all warranted. In fact, this may be the best, quickest, most helpful response I've ever gotten from a tech sup kind of issue. The only other company that comes close in Omni Software. Thank you!!!
