Destination Volume Disk Space Needs

Can anyone explain how much disk space SD backups require? Is it essentially the same as the source volume (i.e. if my Mac HD uses 250gb then I should expect the Backup All Files operation to need that much)? Does SD utilize compression for any of the backup modes? I looked all over and cannot find anything about this. Am I missing something in the User Guide or is it just assumed that users will know SD requires the same space as source. My question mainly stems from wanting to do copies to Network drives using the 'Read/Write "Sparse" Image' setting. Thanks all!
