We'll always have $ open -a

If the goal is to have SD! do a scripted backup, can't you trigger that from the Terminal with:

$ open -a SuperDuper! /Applications/SuperDuper\!.app/Contents/Resources/Copy\ Scripts/MyDeluxeBackupScript.dset

That should handle a lot of real-world occasions.

The actual pathname would depend on the name of your script and where you had stashed it, but you get the idea.
