Booting from backup

I today, bought this program to do a backup of my OS X.
After doing a backup (Sandbox), I was not able to boot from the backup.
(The backup is on an external USB Maxtor One Touch III hard disk).
Reading here in the forums, it says that Mac's cannot boot from external USB hard disks.
Is this true? (I am a Mac newbie)
I could have sworn that I did boot previously from an external USB HD.

I just want to make sure the backup is valid befor suggesting to my customers that this is the 'program of choice' for backups.

My major consideration is to have a backup process in place that offers the same type of protection that Acronis True Image does, or Symantec Ghost, and Symantec Backup Exec (formerly Symantec LiveState Recovery & before that PowerQuest V2i).

That is, bare metal recovery, bootable rescue media to access the backup image to restore to a new or old hard disk, mountable images to inject or extract files, scheduling, full backups and incremental (only files that changed since last backup), and the ability to store backup images to media sizes for DVD archicing (4.7Gb).

Am I asking for too much, does ANYTHING exist?

IF the Mac is to become a major competitor, and I belive it will, it will need the same or similar apps to compete with Windows apps, especially for Disaster Recovery/

Ongoing issue-need reply from manufacturer please

OK, did this backup last night, to an external USB hard disk, all was 100% done, and so be it if I cannot boot from it, so:

I removed the hard disk from the OneTouch3 USB external case (it's a Seagate Momentus 60Gb HD), and installed in in the laptop, won't boot.

If this software is supposed to do what it advertises, why am I having such a difficult time?

Reply is needed ASAP, as I need a solution, and this is not working.

If I were advising my customers re using SuperDuper for backups on the Mac side, I'd definitely recommend obtaining an external firewire drive (better consistent throughput than USB). Creating bootable clones, for example, is simple and reliable on a Mac. I'd take a look at the external drives offered by OtherWorldComputing. I've had good luck with Hitachi DeskStars and TravelStars for backing up my desktop and laptop systems.

On the new Intel Macs, I believe you can also make bootable backups to external USB drives.

Just found out if you hold the option key down on boot you can boot via USB all be it very slow. Firewire is the answer.

Well, That's EXACTLY what I thought (USB!!)

This is EXACTLY what I thought, and what I was initally referring to.
I have a MacBook (Intel), and yes, I have previously booted many times, from my USB external hard disk.

NOT NOW THOUGH!!

This is very frustrating, to go to thest forums AFTER purchasing the product, for some level of support, sending e-mails to the support e-mail address, and then while purusing the list of messages, seeing that people are being told to only ask in one place, not both.

HOW LONG SHOULD ONE EXPECT TO WAIT FOR HELP?

IS THIS PRODUCT FOR END USERS/KIDDES or for consideration for Enterprise customers? (and if so, shouldn't the level of support be as fitting)?

Bottom line:

Three attemted backups to an external USB hard disk, none are bootable in or out of the case (and now I have a 'bastardized USB case, trying to verify/prove-disprove the issues.).

PLEASE......HELP IS NEEDED!!

The SD user manual is a PDF downloadable from this site for free. I believe it recommends use of a firewire drive as the recommended solution with this app. While I haven't used SD in the Enterprise, I've found it to be totally reliable and indispensable for 3 Mac systems in my home office. By the way, Dave Nanian (SD developer) normally is av ailable to respond personally to user question like yours. Any number of his customers will readily confirm that his app and his support are top-shelf!

A few things here, Bob.

First, it's very important to note that a Sandbox is not a backup, it's a way of doing a checkpoint of your system. So, if you want something you can recover from, you should be using "Backup - all files", not any of the Sandbox scripts.

Second, only Intel based Macintoshes can start from USB drives. PPC Macs cannot. Both can boot from FireWire drives, so I'd strongly suggest a Mac "boot compatible" (Oxford based) FireWire drive if you can use one.

The most common reason for a failure to boot is that the drive is partitioned with the wrong scheme. As of a later release of 10.4.x, Disk Utility started letting users format HFS+ volumes even when the on-disk format was MBR (Windows) partitioning, and this can be quite confusing.

In general, external drives should be partitioned with the Apple Partition Map scheme, which is compatible (on an external drive) with both Intel and Power PC Macs.

If you're using exclusively Intel Macs, you should use the "GUID" partitioning scheme. A drive that moves internal to an Intel Mac must be GUID as well.

So, please check the partitioning scheme and see if you're using the right one. Once you do that, and use "Backup - all files" with Smart Update or Erase, then copy, your backup should boot successfully.

Still, no go

OK, followed the instructions in the last post:
In general, external drives should be partitioned with the Apple Partition Map scheme...

No difference, won't boot.

Will try a 6th time later this evening, any other items to try?

Additionally, if this indeed is fact (as posted in the last reply) is it in the docs?

What was it partitioned as, Bob? And what happens when you try to boot?

The change to the way Apple handles the partitioning scheme was made recently so it's not yet in the documentation. However, it is documented within Disk Utility itself.

Since you seem to have changed things around quite a bit, and you have an Intel Mac, did you use GUID or APM? And was the drive internal or external?

Follow up

I partitioned with the Apple Partition Map scheme.

When I boot, nothing, blinking cursor, top left of screen.

Please elaborate on, "did you use GUID or APM?", I am a bit unclear....

I cloned to an external USB hard disk.

My 'concept' or purpose is to increase the hard disk size to a larger one, so I clone it to the external device, remove the hard disk from the external device (USB), install it in the laptop, and expect to boot.

Am I missing something?

Thanking you all for your continued assistance.

I have a Wed AM appt at my clients for 'selling him' this backup process.

He has 4 Macs, and all I want to do is have a disaster recovery procedure in place, similar to what I do with PC's in the Windows world, and I use Acronis True Image + Symantec BackupExec there....and it's seamless.

I assumed that I'd be the guinea pig for my test with my own Mac (ok guys, at least I made the jump and I'm on the Mac bandwagon now..... a few years ago, I wouldn't even look, but now, I'm a convert, hence my eagerness to solve this issue).

Hoping for a resolve

OK. If you're on a USB drive, please use the GUID partition scheme (Options button in the Partition tab of Disk Utility), since you're only going to be starting up Intel-based Macs from that drive.

Then, make sure you erase the drive and use the "Mac OS Extended" format.

Once that's complete, Smart Update the external using "Backup - all files". Then, select the drive in System Preferences' "Startup Disk" preference pane.

When you watch it start, see if you get a grey screen, Apple, spinning "pinwheel", etc. A blinking cursor at the upper left isn't something I'd expect to see at all.
