Can't boot to RAID

I've set up a RAID 1 on my Intel iMac between the MacHD and an IDE firewire external. I did this by creating a Sparse Image of the MacHD (pg 16 of users guide) and restored by booting from another external drive and restoring the Image per pg 27. Everything looks fine. All the data is there and the MacHD/IDE RAID is a Startup option but it won't boot and defaults back to the other external HD. Any ideas?
