Reasonable backup time expectations

I have a 2TB WD external drive that I have routinely backed up (Smart Update) to a Volume on another powered external drive for years (say, 6 years of bi-weekly backups). It typically takes 5-10 minutes to run (not a lot of update activity during the week).

I have recently switched to using a smaller footprint "portable" (USB-powered) 2TB external drive as the source drive. The same "Smart Update" backup is now running in excess of 12 hours (to the same target, powered drive as well as to another 2TB portable drive). Both backups run and run and run, over night and into the next morning.

Does that sound right? Is there something I can check on to see why the significant difference in run time?
