Speeding up backups to disks with multiple partitions

I'm keeping 4 volumes on my WD MyBook 500GB to rotate snapshots. The first time, everything was OK, then backups started taking a really long time (effective copy speed of 3MB/s, also the backup disk was extremely noisy). So I disabled Spotlight search on all the partitions on my backup disk (drag all the volumes to the "Privacy" list in the Spotlight prefpane). this sped things up to the regular 10-12MB/s for a full copy.

There are a few entries in the forum mentioning this (but with different symptoms). Maybe you guys should mention it in the FAQ (-:

Cheers,
Andreas.
