Dupe to seperate internal drive problem

Hi-

Just tried to clone from one internal drive to another. Everything seemed to work, but there was a failure on setting the target disk as the startup volume. As a matter of fact, my machine will not recognize the cloned disk as bootable, even from open firmware (i.e. holding down option at boot, the new disk doesn't display as an option.).

Here's the log output from my clone attempt:

Hm -- the indication here is that the drive itself can't be booted from at all (even though we've got it set up as bootable). Have you tried to install Tiger to it directly, to see if that will boot?

If that works, how exactly is this drive installed/attached/etc?

Hmm. Interesting. I'll try to install Tiger fresh now onto the partition the disk is 2 partitions (80GB for OSX and 30 for OS9), I'm trying to install to the X partition. I'll publish the results asap.

Fresh install of Tiger to the target partition worked. Now I'll attempt to clone the source disk again.

Any ideas?

Update. I've again done a full duplication of the source disk to the target disk and have had the same result. Everything copies successfully, but the disk can't be set as the startup disk. Same error as before:
Quote:
"Can't find IOService for disk1s9"
. Strange thing is the target disk is actually /dev/disk1s10

As noted above, a fresh Tiger install worked flawlessly.

Here's the setup of the disk:

Source disk: 40GB 1 partition. (/dev/disk0)
Dest. disk: 120GB 2 partitions:
  1. 80GB Case-sensitive journaled HFS+ at /dev/disk1s10
  2. 30GB Journaled HFS+ at /dev/disk1s12 (Will be an OS9 part.)

Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Well, the command we use to do this is quite simple:

Code:
bless -folder "/Volumes/Mac OS X/System/Library/CoreServices" -save9 -label "Mac OS X" -setBoot
We never make use of the device ID: that's being used by OSX itself. (You can see the exact command by Cmd-clicking the title bar of the failed log, and look in the Logs folder that'll appear: the paired .offendingCommand file contains the exact failed command... but the error is from this.)

If you run that in Terminal after the copy with SD, does it work?

Hmm. I see the failed attempt in the offendingCommand log. So, giving it a manual try I got the error:

Code:
power-mac-g4:~ scoomey$ sudo bless -folder "/Volumes/Mac OS X/System/Library/CoreServices" -save9 -label "Mac OS X" -setBoot
Can't find IOService for disk1s9
Could not determine if partition needs booter
Error while updating booter for /dev/disk1s10
Can't find IOService for disk1s9
Could not determine if partition needs booter
Can't get Open Firmware information
Can't set Open Firmware
I tink there is something truly screwy happening with this drive. The error is referencing disk1s9, and this partition does not even exist:

Code:
power-mac-g4:/dev scoomey$ ls -l /dev/disk1s*

This disk *used* to be my main linux disk as of about a week ago. I've since fomatted it twice to put OSX on there (via SuperDuper). Maybe this is some phantom partition left over from Linux that OSX can't format??

Stumped!

Yeah, there's definitely something wacky going on here... but you can see why we're having trouble!

I assume you've tried totally redoing the partition table for the drive?

found the issue! Not sure if this is a bug or not, but when I formatted the disk, Apple's disk utility didn't create the APPLE_BOOT partition. I formatted at least 3 or 4 times and it was never created. Then after one more reformat, the magic boot partition was created. Whodathunkit?

Anyhow, a subsequent clone worked absolutely flawlessly, thanks for all your help. Look forward to registering soon.

I wonder why it didn't create it... I also didn't think you needed an HFS+ wrapper in most cases. Weird... but I'm glad you're set.
