Creating a new user account

My startup disk is a clone made by SuperDuper (shared users and applications). When I create a new user account the new user folder is created on my startup disk rather than on the original drive. How can I avoid this? Next time when I perform a smart update this folder will presumably be deleted. What I want is the new user folder to be in the same location as the original user folders.

Well, the thing is that the point of a Safety Clone is to isolate the changes you're making like that to the clone. Since the other information associated with the account (in NetInfo) are isolated to the Safety Clone, the file information is too...

If you want to create a real account, you should boot back to the original volume, create it there, then update your Safety Clone.

I was afraid of that. It also means I have to reinstall a lot of things. Isn't there a shortcut, like making a symbolic link of the newly created user folder? I don't know how to do that in the Terminal application.

Well, no, you don't *have* to reinstall a lot of things. Instead, as long as you're happy with your existing Safety Clone, you could clone back.

This is an advanced operation, so make sure you have a backup of the original volume, OK?

Here's what to do:

- Boot from the Sandbox
- Select the Sandbox as the source and the original volume as the destination
- Use "Backup - all files" as the script
- Use "Smart Update" as the "During copy" method

DO NOT DEVIATE FROM THESE SETTINGS!

Then, run the copy. SuperDuper! will update the base volume with what you've installed on the Sandbox, including any users you've created.
