Optical disks have always proven to be less reliable, in my experience.
Yes, it's a few hundred bucks, but it's also not something that needs to be upgraded a lot, and if you're that worried about this, it seems the right way to go. Your Mac -- or Macs that you get over the life of the device -- cost a lot more.
