Booting from backup

I today, bought this program to do a backup of my OS X.
After doing a backup (Sandbox), I was not able to boot from the backup.
(The backup is on an external USB Maxtor One Touch III hard disk).
Reading here in the forums, it says that Mac's cannot boot from external USB hard disks.
Is this true? (I am a Mac newbie)
I could have sworn that I did boot previously from an external USB HD.

I just want to make sure the backup is valid befor suggesting to my customers that this is the 'program of choice' for backups.

My major consideration is to have a backup process in place that offers the same type of protection that Acronis True Image does, or Symantec Ghost, and Symantec Backup Exec (formerly Symantec LiveState Recovery & before that PowerQuest V2i).

That is, bare metal recovery, bootable rescue media to access the backup image to restore to a new or old hard disk, mountable images to inject or extract files, scheduling, full backups and incremental (only files that changed since last backup), and the ability to store backup images to media sizes for DVD archicing (4.7Gb).

Am I asking for too much, does ANYTHING exist?

IF the Mac is to become a major competitor, and I belive it will, it will need the same or similar apps to compete with Windows apps, especially for Disaster Recovery/

Ongoing issue-need reply from manufacturer please

OK, did this backup last night, to an external USB hard disk, all was 100% done, and so be it if I cannot boot from it, so:

I removed the hard disk from the OneTouch3 USB external case (it's a Seagate Momentus 60Gb HD), and installed in in the laptop, won't boot.

If this software is supposed to do what it advertises, why am I having such a difficult time?

Reply is needed ASAP, as I need a solution, and this is not working.

If I were advising my customers re using SuperDuper for backups on the Mac side, I'd definitely recommend obtaining an external firewire drive (better consistent throughput than USB). Creating bootable clones, for example, is simple and reliable on a Mac. I'd take a look at the external drives offered by OtherWorldComputing. I've had good luck with Hitachi DeskStars and TravelStars for backing up my desktop and laptop systems.

On the new Intel Macs, I believe you can also make bootable backups to external USB drives.

A few things here, Bob.

First, it's very important to note that a Sandbox is not a backup, it's a way of doing a checkpoint of your system. So, if you want something you can recover from, you should be using "Backup - all files", not any of the Sandbox scripts.

Second, only Intel based Macintoshes can start from USB drives. PPC Macs cannot. Both can boot from FireWire drives, so I'd strongly suggest a Mac "boot compatible" (Oxford based) FireWire drive if you can use one.

The most common reason for a failure to boot is that the drive is partitioned with the wrong scheme. As of a later release of 10.4.x, Disk Utility started letting users format HFS+ volumes even when the on-disk format was MBR (Windows) partitioning, and this can be quite confusing.

In general, external drives should be partitioned with the Apple Partition Map scheme, which is compatible (on an external drive) with both Intel and Power PC Macs.

If you're using exclusively Intel Macs, you should use the "GUID" partitioning scheme. A drive that moves internal to an Intel Mac must be GUID as well.

So, please check the partitioning scheme and see if you're using the right one. Once you do that, and use "Backup - all files" with Smart Update or Erase, then copy, your backup should boot successfully.
