What should I store on my external hard drive?

Hi,

Will you please provide me with some direction? I just purchased my first external hard drive. Here's what I plan on doing. Storing a .dmg file of DiskWarrior, storing a .dmg file of the os x install dvd, storing a clone done with SuperDuper and storing a full Time Machine backup. I will be storing each of these on their own partition (total of 4 partitions). Is this overkill or am I doing the right thing? Do I need to have a individual and separate partition for DiskWarrior and the MAC OS X install disk or am I duplicating the information because they will included in the SuperDuper clone and Time Machine backup?

Thanks so much for any information.

Frank

You could certainly put the two DMGs and the Time Machine backup on the same volume, Frank, and SD! on its own.

But -- if Disk Warrior is installed it'll certainly be copied with your full SD! backup. And, I think an actual DVD is a lot more useful than the DMG of the install DVD, so I wouldn't include either.

Hi Dave

Thanks for your response. So you recommend that I only use 2 partitions and store a SuperDuper clone on one and a full Time Machine backup on the other?

Thanks,

Frank

That's what I'm suggesting. You have the OS X install DVD (and your Disk Warrior DVD) already, Disk Warrior is installed on the SD! copy, and so's OS X. As long as you partition your external drive properly (there are many different explanations of this on the forums, so search a bit -- you want GUID for Intel Macs and Apple Partition Map for Power PC), you should be fine.
