Smile launchTunes 1.0 released

I'm happy to announce that launchTunes, an iTunes 4.0 companion product, has been released today (July 15th).

launchTunes automatically launches any number of remote iTunes "servers" when you launch iTunes locally. This ensures that your shared playlists and libraries are available when you need them.

While it's sometimes possible to access the server you want to start by walking over to it, it's often impossible or inconvenient -- launchTunes makes it easy!

Thanks for reading -- I hope you like it, and the new netTunes 2.0. Let me know!

The Server has to be awake, right?

Launchtunes will not work if the server is on a machine that is asleep, correct?

That's right, Joe -- it doesn't currently send a wake-up packet. But that's something I'll look into supporting in a future release.

Wake Up Packet

Ah-ha, well then that is my number one feature request. A wake-up packet. That would make NetTunes really functional as a home audio tool. Otherwise, you lose some remote functionality because you have to go wake up the damn server!

True, of course. Personally, I don't allow the server to sleep -- most "servers" are kept up and ready to serve!

The other problem is that any kind of "wake up" action won't work if the machine is wireless: the network interface isn't kept active, so there's nothing there to accept the packet...
