Question Managing SD and TM to minimise backup space?

This may be old news but I've been combing threads and finding nothing. I'm looking for the ultimate backup solution: Using Super Duper! + Time Machine seems sensible but very space consuming (esp for HD video user like myself). Is there anyone out there who uses SD to generate a bootable copy of system files only, while using TM to archive data files, as a way of minimizing use of disk space? Could one then boot-up from SD and restore the rest of the data using TM? Anyone?
