G5 (PPC, 10.4.8) keeps hanging on initial backup
Hello,
I'm a first-time SuperDuper user. Have heard many great things but am sadly frustrated and disappointed now that I'm trying to use it. [Note: I bought and am using the full registered version.]

I'm on a G5 (PPC!) dual 2.3ghz with 4gb RAM running OS X 10.4.8. My main internal HD is 400gb. I just installed a secondary internal HD that is also 400gb. I intend for this to be a clone of the main HD.

I formatted my new HD (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), repaired permissions on my maind HD, then I logged back in with no other apps running (held down shift), and told SD to do a "Backup all files" with the options set to erase the new HD first.

I left it overnite and found it hanging in the morning, about 75% through. I left it for over an hour just to be sure, and nothing changed.

I figured I might have more luck if it wasn't the startup disk I'm trying to copy, so I booted from a separate external firewire HD I have (also running 10.4.8). I repaired permissions on my main internal HD, then did a full repair disk on the amin internal HD. Then I erased the seconday internal HD again, and told SD to do backup all (from main to seconadry internal HD). This time it hung after only getting about 1/3 through. In both hangs I've eventually had to hard shutoff the power to the computer (hold down power button), because the Finder has stopped responding and won't come back (along with other apps getting freaked out, like Terminal, Activity Monitor).

I've browsed thru the forums here and tried a few things suggested. I looked for some of the troublesome files suggested in the FAQ section (the Stuffit one doesn't exist on my HD, and the database one doesn't have the missing return carriage error).

I saw the suggestion about hiding SD as soon as it gets going, so now that's what I'm doing with my third attempt at an initial backup. Unfortunately, it's now hanging. I can tell because I've got Activity Monitor running and the CPU usage by SDCopy has gone down to zero, and it's not responding. Plus, the Finder is not responding. So I just brought SD out of hiding to see how far it's gotten and it's only 1/4 thru this time.

I'm able to view the SD log, but the last entry is an hour ago, and just says which directory it was in at the time, nothing weird or special.

I just tried the Terminal trick I saw mentioned: sudo lsof | grep SDCopy
I got a lot of weird stuff I'm not sure how to interpret. I'll paste in a reply to this post.

I don't see anything odd in the system log except this line a whole lot:
Jan 13 20:24:21 Leviathan kernel[0]: IOATAController device blocking bus.
But that may be due to my mouse or something else, not sure.

Please help me get this working!
Reverting to 10.4.7 is NOT an option.

Well, the error you're getting implies drive damage, although since I don't know where you're copying from/to it's hard to say where. Does the system..log indicate any I/O errors?

Hi Dave,
Thanks for taking a look at this. I just emailed you the System.log I saved yesterday.

Leviathan is the external firewire hard drive I was booted from.
Warmech is the source for the backup.
DoppelgangerWarmech is the destination for the backup.

Both warmechs are internal hard drives.

As I indicated in my reply, you definitely seem to be having hardware trouble there. Are both SATA drives (I think they have to be)? Are you sure your cables are set up properly? Are you sure the drive itself isn't one of the large drives that are known to have trouble with the G5's SATA controller?
