Unsure about settings

Hi!
I've read the manual before and after I purchased SD a month ago, just finished another reading and I'm still unsure if I'm taking the right approach.

I have an external 160GB firewire drive from which I boot every now and then for maintenance operations, and it's also the repository of my larger files because my iBooks HD is only 30GB.

I want to use SD for daily backups of my user folder and an occasional backup of all files.

Seems weird to me but from what I could understand, for my first backup I need an empty destination disk no matter whatever settings I choose.
Is this so?

Thanks! =)
Ricardo

A few things, Ricardo:

- There's little point in "occasionally" backing up all files, if you're using Smart Update. SuperDuper! always has to look at every file when it does its thing, and since it only backs up the changed items (and your system items rarely change), I'd suggest always doing a full backup.

- If you want two different kinds of backups, or want to store a backup on a drive with other items, you have two options:

1. Partition the drive into a Data volume and one or more Backup volumes (named appropriately).

2. Create disk images, as explained in the FAQ "How do I update an image?", and use those as virtual volumes alongside your data files.

If you don't have any way to Partition without losing data, Coriolis Systems' iPartition works quite well, and will create and resize partitions "live", with your data in place.

Hope that helps...

Sorry for the late reply but between a nasty cold and vB's upgrade to 3.0.4 I didn't have much time left.

Thanks for the tips Dave.
I managed to get a dvd burner from a friend and burned a gazillion dvds with the contents of my firewire drive, after which, I started a new partition scheme to fit my new backup routines.

No problem on the delay -- sounds like you've got things under control!
