in Windows XP Professional (not in home edition) there is an application included which can make incremental backups (=Smart update)
The interface and user frendliness is baad, but it does the work. Start menu -> al applications -> utilities -> system utilities -> backup (I'm not sure about the exact names in the path, I use swedish systems, so I don't know the english equivalence)
