Verify Disk in Disk Utility freezes the system

I made a copy from my mbp on an external hd.
After an update problem in the original internal hd
I restored the image seamlessly (sigh) except for one thing.

I can verify with Disk Utility
neither the internal hd when booting from it
nor the external hd when booting from it.
The system crashes (almost) immediately.

It is possible to verify the external disk
booting from the internal and viceversa.

I'm using SuperDuper! 2.1.4 v82 on osx 10.4.11 .
I repaired both disk and permissions with no results.

Any hints?
