Backup without overwriting a Separate Folder.

Hi--I currently have three HD for my Power Mac G5---two internal, one external connected via USB2. I use the external for Time Machine Backup, and the second internal drive is mirrored from my Startup HD (via SuperDuper).

I don't have enough room left on my Startup HD (160GB) for my home videos, so I created a stand-alone folder on the second internal HD (320GB) where I keep them. I then manually back these up in another-stand alone folder on my external Maxtor HD (the one I use for Time Machine). Chaotic, but for now at least I have two copies of the Videos..

QUESTION: If I set up a scheduled backup between both internal drives with SuperDuper, can I exclude the stand-alone video folder, or will it overwrite it? What are the proper settings, if so??

Thanks for any advice!

If you exclude a folder from copying, it's not in the list of files that are being copied to the destination. What happens on the destination volume is determined by the "During copy" option.

"Erase, then copy" and "Smart Update" would replicate the selected files on the destination, removing anything that wasn't in the selected set of files (save for Time Machine data, as explained in the "What's going to happen?" part of the UI). "Copy Newer" or "Copy Different" would not remove anything... but also wouldn't produce a bootable copy.

Thanks for the quick reply. It sounds like "Copy Newer" would be the way to go, since i've already created a mirrored HD (bootable disc) using "Smart Copy". I'm still confused on one point--if I use "Copy Newer" from now on to periodically update my second internal drive, using the scheduler, so as to not overwrite my Video Folder, would that now make the mirrored drive not bootable? I could be misreading your comment. Thanks for your help. Don't be shocked if I have another follow-up question (or two)...

As long as you don't mind just having the Videos on the USB drive, you can use Smart Update between the two internal volumes. If you use Copy Newer, the 2nd internal will NOT be bootable: this is not something I would suggest.

Got it-- Well, now that I have a second bootable drive, it seems the smartest thing to do is update my original internal HD with a larger drive that could easily handle the size of the video file, and just mirror that as well. I can't help but think that the ability to "exclude" a file during backup (which Time Machine will allow) could be worked into a later version of SuperDuper!. Thanks again for the help.

Actually, we do allow source files to be excluded, just like Time Machine, as explained in the User's Guide.
