Read/Write Error

Hi. I'm trying to do a pre-Lion backup. I do have a superduper image on my NAS, but I'm away from the NAS for a couple months. I last backed-up a couple weeks ago. Two things have changed since that backup: new update to SD, and I'm using a different harddrive (portable seagate usb).

I've tried doing a backup several times now, and I keep getting the same type of error. It kept getting held up at a certain picture file in iPhoto. I ran through the steps in the troubleshoot section of the user guide. I've deleted photos, restarted my computer several times, but I keep getting these I/O errors. These are old albums that I have not touched in some time, and had no trouble being backed up before today. At this point, I'm wondering (even hoping, perhaps) if my external harddrive is to blame, or is my iPhoto crapping out? Thanks!

Partial error log:

It looks like that file is damaged on the source. Have you reviewed the Troubleshooting section of the User's Guide that goes into how to determine whether or not the file is damaged, etc? (It likely can't be read from the source...)

I did go through the troubleshooting steps. The problem is, I can delete the photo-in-question, then run SD again, but it'll get tripped up at another photo. Like I said, I had no problem backing this up a couple weeks ago and have not used iPhoto since.

That's not really relevant to whether or not the files are readable or now, though. So, you went to that file and tried to duplicate it. Were you able to do so without error, in Finder?

Yes, I could duplicate the file. I then copied the new copy back into iPhoto and deleted the existing version. Same problem.

...update, ok I tried again, and this time it appears to have gotten past that photo. Now it's tripped up with a different error at another photo. What's going on with my iPhoto???

So, here, it's indicating the destination volume has failed, which makes sense given the fact that you were able to duplicate the file. What are you copying to, and what have you tried to deal with that side of things?

All I've tried is re-trying the backup. Restarting the computer, etc. I did format the harddrive prior to starting, in guid mac etended journal format (I know I butchered that, but I followed the instructions).

I have not tried a different backup drive. Unfortunately, I'm doing a temporary military assignment and don't have access to my usual arsenal of tech gadgets, so I'm stuck with this portable seagate that I borrowed from a friend.

Would you suggest trying a different drive? Does it sound like the drive is the problem? I tried again after posting that last log, and I did not get a drive error, but I did get another i/o error like the previous ones, this time on a different file. Thanks.

I'm not getting the level of information I need to help. If you could, send your log in with the Send to shirt pocket button so I get additional diagnostic information, and I'll continue to try to help you via email.
