Radically faster backups with MacBook vs PowerBook?

I recently upgraded from a PowerBook G4 (1.5Ghz G4)) to a MacBook (2.16 Ghz Core Duo) and I'm noticing amazingly faster SD backups. While I'm delighted by this, I'm curious whether this is normal SD behavior. The PowerBook would typically process the backup at "effective copy speed" of 10 MB/second - the MacBook processes at 300 MB/second or higher (I'm running a backup as I write this - at 500 MB/second)! These backups occur over a Gigabit ethernet network to a disk image on a FireWire drive connected to our Mac OS X Server (a Core Solo Mac Mini).

While the MacBook is certainly a faster machine that the PowerBook, I had no idea that there was anything it could do 30x faster. Is this behavior to be expected? Can you offer any explanation?
