HD upgrade MAC laptop

Just purchased SuperDuper and was wondering what is the best way to upgrade my laptop HD. Purchased a Toshiba 80gig 16mb buffer drive and want to basically clone my existing drive to a firewire Lacie. Remove old TI drive and replace with new Toshiba. Then shoot the image back to the Toshiba from the Lacie. Is this possible. Just upgraded to Tiger.. Thanks for the help..

Right. You'll basically do a full backup to the external LaCie (name it the same as the internal drive), using "Backup - all files". Boot from the LaCie to make sure it's OK. Then, shut down and replace the drive.

Boot back from the LaCie and prepare the internal drive, once again using the same volume name. Then, use "Backup - all files" to copy back from the LaCie to the internal.

Shut down, detach the LaCie, and boot up from the internal. Make sure it's all OK, and you're set!

Thanks Dave. I originally made a backup image dmg file on the Lacie. Do I rename the Lacie to Macintosh HD? the select full back-up. When doing so it ask me to erase all files on the original drive. Is that correct. Thanks for the help..

I recommend against using a DMG on the LaCie -- write directly to it so you can boot from it and verify the backup. As you said, name it "Macintosh HD" if that's the internal drive name, too.

It'll prompt to replace the files on the LaCie: that's right, it's going to erase it, so make sure there's nothing on there you want to keep!
