"Warning : bad address" what to do ?
Hello Dave, hello everyone.
Since yesterday I have a big problem : I can't make a backup anymore because of this. | 10:50:58 AM | Info | WARNING: Caught I/O exception(14): Bad address -> I started from another drive (and the Tiger DVD), repaired the disk (it seems nothing was wrong), repaired the permissions -> I've trashed Image Capture and the associated files, eventually replacing it with an "old copy" from a back-up Nothing worked : SuperDuper! stops and the log tells this. I'm a bit lost here. What can/should I do ? THANKS !!!! |
So, even after deleting/replacing Image Capture on the source, it still gave this bad address error? That seems to point to the destination as the source of the error. You can try to verify this by looking at your system log for the I/O error: it'll give a device ID (something like "disk3s1") which indicates what drive failed. (You can map the device ID to the drive by examining the drives in System Profiler.)
If the destination, you should try repairing that as well. If repairing it doesn't help, you can try erasing it. If the source... well, let me know, and we'll go from there. |
Hello Dave, thanks for your answer.
Yes, even with : - erasing/formatting -several times- the destination drive once I got the error the first time ; - trashing the app from the source drive (and the associated files) then replacing it with another ; - repairing the source drive and authorizations I still have the problem. The console only says : 2006-04-15 10:52:35.450 SuperDuper![359] ***ERROR OCCURRED: ditto: /Applications/Image Capture.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/ImageCaptureHelp/./ImageCaptureHelp.helpindex: Input/output errorI don't have any other information about the drive. I'm still puzzled by all this ... |
OK -- you'll want to check the system log (select it in the sidebar of Console) to see what drive it is, internal or external...

Silly me !
Ok... lucky for me "ridicule doesn't kill", because I would be dead right now :)
(And thanks to David for helping me). I thought I had trashed the corrupted app - Image Capture- but I didn't. I did trash "Capture.app", the one that allows to make screen capture, and that was the wrong one. Why ? Because Spotlight finds the only "Capture" app on the french version of Tiger. The one that was corrupted could not be found, by me or by Spotlight, since its name is "Transfert d'Images". It's the app that allows to transfer photos from your camera. That's a weird translation, to say the least, from english to french : "capture" = "transfer" ? Anyway, I trashed the newly found "good" app, and SuperDuper! worked fine. One last advice for the french speaking readers of this forum : go see the Cmd-I informations, it gives the "original" name of the app. http://baragouine.net/wordpress/wp-c...ertcapture.jpg Hope this helps :) |
Thanks for the summary, Arnaud, and I'm glad things are working again.
