Unable to boot

I'm running OS 10.4.4 on a Quad and tried (for the first time on any machine) to boot from my backup - a LaCie d2 (FW400) - and failed.

My SD backups are "made bootable".
I'm running the current LaCie firmware.
I can boot the d2 via "Startup Disk" in System Prefs.
I've run Disk Utility - Repair & Prefs on the d2.
I have turned the d2 on before starting the Quad (!).
I've tried holding down the 'D' key at startup.
I've tried holding down the "Boot from External HD" keys at startup (Shift/Option/apple/Delete).

Goes to 1 second of grey screen with tiny mac folder with ? mark, followed by grey screen with barred circle.

Any thoughts?

You can boot the d2 via "Startup Disk" in its current state, but not when trying to do it "directly" (without Startup Disk)? Did you try Option-boot?

Yes, via "Startup Disk" is fine (but obviously of no use if I have an internal HD failure).

When using Option/boot the Startup Manager screen appears, with the cursor in clock mode for about a minute. When it goes 'normal' I select the second (unlabled) OS X disk and click the 'continue' arrow. I then get the grey screen with Apple logo for an instant before the barred circle appears.

This certainly seems like a hardware issue with the drive, Phil. If "Startup Disk" works, then the backup we've created is fine. But it sounds like the drive isn't spinning up quickly enough when you go from an "off" condition.

What I'd do is turn the drive off, then get to the option screen. Wait for the arrow, then turn the drive on and press the refresh (circle-arrow) button. When the drive appears, immediately click it and click the straight arrow.

Thanks for your help Dave. The quickness of your replies is greatly appreciated. I sort of thought that if the external HD booted from 'Startup Disk' then the SD side of things was most likely OK.

That last procedure you suggested didn't work so I rang Apple Care and, in a round about way the problem is "fixed". In case you ever need to know for someone else, or care to suggest why this is so:

If I boot into Target Disk mode, then shut down; the next Option/boot shows the d2 disk in the 'Startup Manager' screen - as a third choice (with name). The second disk, which I had assumed was the d2, is to be ignored apparently.

I can then select the d2 and boot from it with no problems.

But I have to do the Target Disk mode procedure all over again for the next time I want to boot from the external drive.

??????????

Thanks again,

Phil

I've never seen that before, Phil! Very strange... but I'm glad you've got it working.
