Apps off?

I'm a new SD user and have a simple question. I am planning to do a Smart Update every day and it seems to me that somewhere I saw something that recommended that I have all apps shut down when doing the update. True? If so, how big a deal is this? I can't imagine that I'll remember to do this every day- is there a simple solution?

In general, you don't have to do this. Just try not to do much with the computer (e.g. don't record TV shows, perform big downloads, etc).

I seem to remember that Mail.app's data won't be backed up if Mail is open.

I do SU at least once a day, having a couple workflows, the particular one being triggered by a particular keystroke, that quits all my online apps (those chosen because they are most likely all that are open at the time I choose to SU), and that then run the chosen Settings file.

No, that's definitely not true: Mail will definitely be backed up if open. Entourage presents more trouble, because it uses a monolithic database...

I sure wish I could remember where I got that idea. It was definitely not Entourage (haven't used that since Mail in Jaguar). It wasn't the whole Panther Mail v. Tiger Mail issue. I've searched these forums and of course can not find any reference that comes close enough to have made me, in any kind of messed up mind, think Mail was as I thought.

So it goes.

Certainly didn't hurt anything to quit mail, Tim! :)

I would think that it's a good idea to quit every app that will "upgrade" during the backup.
Such as mail apps, newsreaders and so on.
I quit Eudora and NewsFire when I'm using SD!
I guess it can't hurt to do so :)
