curious messages in system.log
Is SD causing these?

Yes, if you've had a failed copy, we collect diagnostic messages from the system log corresponding to that failure. Those wouldn't happen unless there's a failure, though. (That's part of what's going on when you get the sheet that says "Collecting diagnostics..." - in fact, it's the part that takes the most time.)
