why would this message appear in the console log?

Well... certainly permissions shouldn't be denied. At the end of a backup, we log the last 200 lines of your system log so if you have a problem, we can see if your hardware was generating errors at the same time we got copy problems. I have no idea why you'd be denied permission to access the log, though.
