Backup External HD (TCP/IP Snap Server)
 

I have an external hard drive. However, it is not connected by a Firewire or USB cable.

This external Hard Drive is a Snap Server and is on our Router Switch, and thus obviously runs over TCP/IP. That means it is on our "LAN". It is available to all the PCs and Macs in the house.

I plan to buy a new hard drive to which I will make backups. I'm going to stick it in the basement (BASEMENT EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE)

I want to install Super Duper on my PowerMac, but I want to know what hard drives it can actually back up:

• I know Super Duper can backup an internal hard drive.
• I suspect it can backup a Firewire connected hard drive.
• But, can it back up a Snap Server?

I have a similar setup - using a SnapServer 2200. You can backup to a disk image over the network, but not directly to the hard drive. The manual has the details - page 18 or so. You need to have the SnapServer disk mounted and visible in the Finder (turn on Apple and Windows sharing and then Go ... Connect to Server), select this when choosing the destination for the backup. The initial backup like this is slow - at least on my network - but much better when just updating a read/write sparseimage. You can even mount the latter over the network and read directly from them. So, in answer to your Q. SD can backup to all 3 types of hardware, but not in exactly the same manner.

I'm not sure if I was clear. I do not want to back up TO the snap server.

I want to buy an external Hard Drive and back up TO it.

I want to back up FROM my internal hard drive and FROM my Snap Server.

Right now, the Snap Server has all the common files from all the PCs and Macs in the house. I really don't store anything important on the local hard drives if I can help it. So I want to make sure the important data on the Snap Server is backed up. Plus I want to back up the PowerMac's internal hard drive.

We can't copy a network volume, Dan, no (and you can't copy directly to it, either -- just to an image stored on it). Sorry!
