Drive not showing up as boot drive
Hi
I'm using a MBP Mid-15 with OSX 11.5 and the latest SD! I want to upgrade my SSD and need to boot from an external drive to do so. I formated my Toshiba USB3-Drive as APFS and did a full back up (Backup All files. I actually did that twice now, but the drive won't show up as a bootable device. Neither when I hit Option-Key on startup nor when I check the startup-pane in preferences. https://velofahren.ch/perla/images/HDtool.png |
You didn't make an erase-then-copy backup. Please review this post for instructions:

Hey Dave, thanks a lot, wasn't aware of that. It worked. The drive still doesn't show up in the preference pane, but it's there when I boot holding the option key. which is all that matters.

Can you give me a hint on how to put that filesystem from the SD-Backup Drive onto the new internal SSD now? I booted from that USB-Drive now but when I launch SD! the internal SSD is not a possible destination (only Disk Image)
Edit: I guess, it didn't really boot from the USB drive. That's probably why the destination is missing... |
You can see what you're running from in "About this Mac". It may be that this drive isn't fully boot compatible...

OK, I got it to boot from the USB Drive. But it was painfully slow. I realized it wasn’t an ssd drive after all.
So I bought a new drive. Did APFS-format from Disk Utility, then a SD! ‘erase all and copy’ - it still didn’t show up in the preference pane but it was there when I hit the option key booting up. I swapped the internal SSD in 5 minutes, booted from the USB Drive and did the same SD! operation the other way: From the UBS to internal SSD (did a APFS formatting first). Very satifsfied! Great tool and great support. Thanks Dave. I’m glad I can always rely on SuperDuper! |
Glad to hear a better drive did...better! :-)
