Partitioning
 

Hello,
I want to be sure to have the right partition sceme to use for Duplicate and Sandbox.
I'm using an intel iMac with a 152 GB HD capacity and 112 GB available.
I have a Firewire drive with a 232 Gb capacity that I plan to partition into 2 drives one for Duplicate and one for Sandbox - shared users and applications.
I'm a bit confused about this.
1. How should the space on the Firewire drive be partitoned size wise?
2.Will I always be booted from the Sandbox on the Firwire drive or only to indroduce updates?
3.If I'm always booted from the Firewire drive won't this be slower than using the internal drive?
4.Should the Internal HD be partitioned for this instead?

Hi, Rick. To determine the size Sandbox you need, the easiest thing to do is to create one before you partition. So, use the Sandbox script to make a Sandbox on the external using Smart Update or Erase, then copy. Once done, look at the amount of disk space it takes, and add about 20-30% or so. Then, partition as appropriate.

You only need to run from the Sandbox when you're trying out something you don't trust. So, if 10.4.9 comes out and you want to test it before committing to it, update your Sandbox, start up from it, and then install 10.4.9 there.

Similarly, if a new drive or something comes out that you want to "isolate" in the Sandbox before you commit to it, boot from the Sandbox, try it out.

Once you've determined what you want to do, you can boot back and install on the "real" drive.
