Cloning/sychronising 2 powerbook G4's?
My business runs from my Powerbook G4 running OS X 1.4.11. I backup using Backup but my past experience tells me that if my main laptop crashes/breaks /is stolen there will be a significant delay before I am fully up and running again. So I want to set up one of my Powerbooks as a 'always ready' backup.
So I imagine I would clone everything onto the backup machine and then synch it everyday or so. If needs be I want to be able to pick up the backup machine and use it. Will this work with Superduper? Thanks for your help. Nick |
Sure, you could put the 2nd G4 into "FireWire Target Disk Mode" and copy to it. But it might be easier to back up to an external FireWire drive, properly partitioned, since you can boot the other Powerbook from that...

As I said, if you want to put the other laptop into FireWire Target Disk Mode (hold down T during power on), you can copy directly to it. It's just a bit of a pain to have to do that every time.
As far as "portability at all times" goes, well, carrying a small external FireWire drive is not a lot more than carrying two laptops. :) |

Ok so now please help me would a 'small' external drive work as an exact clone of my laptop - including adobe photoshop, excel etc and several thousand photographs and itunes? I would need all of these to function without a hitch. |
I use an Iomega 160 GB firewire/usb2 external drive for just this purpose. Slips quite easily into one of the smaller pockets in my laptop bag.
It's small, fast and has performed without a hitch for well over a year. Reasonably priced and available from the Apple store. |
Please realize that any "copy protected" applications (e.g. Photoshop) will likely need to be reactivated if you try to use them on a different Mac.
