Cloning and back up

So far so good booting to my clone on an external FW drive. Just a tiny bit of lag after my computer is being woke up from a sleep.

I was just thinking...
This strategy is a good one in the event my clone gets a bad update or the system screws up from some other problem. I just smart update the original back to the clone.

Really, In a safety clone scenario my data is only in one place (the internal drive) and my clone (external drive) shares this data via aliases/symlink. Doesn't a good backup strategy involve having duplicates of data on two different drives? In the event that data is corrupt on one you still have the other? For instance, if something unfortunate happened to my internal drive right now I would lose everything! It seems to me that a safety clone by itself isn't suffucient for ultimate protection. Should I have another script to back up my user folder to the second partition on the external drive in a sparse image?

A Safety Clone definitely isn't a backup -- it's a system checkpoint. You're absolutely right that it's not sufficient as a backup -- you should always back up the *original* drive as well.
