Can I REALLY do this?

As I understand it, I can actually just erase and set up my original drive so that I can install Classic Mode on it and then just start up the computer with my Clone backup and restore the drive and nothing will be lost and I can go on. Is that right? Any caveats?

Is anyone having problems with Tiger 10.4.1 and the destruction of permissions such that the drive had to be completely restored?

Anyse:

There are two kind of "different" steps there, and I'm not at all sure how they relate.

You're first erasing your drive, and installing "classic mode" on it. But then, you're using a clone to restore, which erases anything you did to the drive.

What exactly are you trying to do?

(Haven't heard of any permission destruction...)

What I am trying to do

Well, like many users of Tiger, I have lost my "Classic" feature of my Mac.

It seems to me that I have to do as follows to get "Classic" support.
1. Use Disk utility to erase the drive choosing the option to make the drive "Classic Compatible"
2. (Here is where I get lost, I think) Reinstall the "original" system from the PowerMac G4 Restore disk.
3. From the newly installed system X that came with my Mac (10.2.x), install "Classic Support" from the G4 restore disk.
4. From here is where I would have to start to get files from the Clone.

I was thinking that I would have to then do a "Smart Copy" from the booted "Clone" to my laptop hard disk at this point.

Does this make sense or can you suggest another way to get "Classic Support" installed onto my current Tiger configuration?

I hope that this all makes sense and, if you want to give me a step by step of how you would do this, I would appreciate it.

This is unusual, because I have Classic on this computer, as well as Tiger, and haven't lost either.

I'm also unable to find a "Classic Compatible" option in Disk Utility: do you mean install OS9 drivers?

In other words, are you trying to boot from OS9 or just get Classic back?

If just classic, you should be able to use the "Software Restore" Feature of your CDs to just put it on the drive... so, no cloning, erasing or anything else necessary...

Getting Classic on my laptop

Thank you for your help.

I will try to install the "Classic Support" on my laptop when Apple sends me a new copy of my install disk.

Anyse :D

Sounds good! I think that'll be much easier than what you were planning.
