All data gone, just links now. What happened?

I think i just fucked up a huge backup but want to know if you probably have an idea. I used to backup "new" or "different" files to a 200GB external HD with superduper using "backup all files > copy newer" or "backup all files > copy different". Everything went fine, it added new files to lets say my "user > films" folder...

Now, this morning i used the sandbox method, cause i thought it would only copy user related data and leave the other things like apps and so untouched. It even says "no files are removed/deleted" in the description right?
But now on my external backup drive all user folders are just links to my general macbook hardrive. Does that mean they DID delete my former files? WHY? are they all gone? this is the work of months.
Is there any chance to get the data back or is it somewhere else on the external drive? I don't get it. :(

Oh no! :( That's not what a 'sandbox' does -- it's not designed to 'only copy user data'. Quite the opposite -- it doesn't copy user data at all (you'd want to use "Backup - user files" for that).

A Sandbox creates links to share the information specified by the script (either "user files and applications" or just "user files"). If that link replaces an existing folder, it doesn't explicitly 'remove' the files, but it does replace the folder with the link... it's basically overwriting an 'old' thing with a 'new' thing (of a different type -- the 'new' thing, with the same name, is the link that the Sandbox creates).

Fortunately, you didn't do an 'erase-then-copy' -- it's quite likely that the files are still on the drive. Data Rescue II -- from Prosoft Engineering -- should be able to recover them...

I hope that helps.

okay i will try data rescue II then, will take days i think, but it's worth a try.
i did not even change, delete, move anything on that drive so i hope everything will be found. last time i tried that with data rescue, it resulted in about 5%-10% rescued data (renamed to "0001.**" something like that) but then i had overwritten everything already (or even formatted i think) ... i hope it will work better this time)

so thank you for the answer, good to know.... i will never use sandbox again.

Well, you can use Sandbox -- just for its intended purpose!

I think because things were mostly not really touched (at least, given what you've described), it's quite likely the data will be readily recoverable.

thank you.
do you know if there is a way with data rescue to recover the files in the original directory structure? i only get the files in specific type-folders, with new names :( so i'd have to check 75 GB of data (thats what the scan found), every single file to see what it actually is. i know, you're not the DR support, but prolly you can give me a hint? :) thank you again.

Unfortunately, I just don't know. Sorry...
