Am I barking up the right tree?

New to this- so let me try something on here.

As I understand it, I can either back up my user files (no OS or Apps) or make a bootable clone (does contain my OS, all of my Apps and user files, etc--that is, EVERYTHING that is currently on my internal HD) on my firewire external HD.

As I ponder which to choose, it seems to me that having a bootable clone available on my external HD would be useful if my iMac HD craps out, while having backed up only my user files would be useful if my OS goes nighty night, but my internal HD is still healthy. If this is correct and given that either bad situation might (will?) occur, why not do both? I have lots of space on the HD.

Am I barking up the right tree??

Well -- since your full backup has your user files (and you can always copy those back), it doesn't really help you a lot, but it *is* additional redundancy, and that's always a good thing...

So why make the option available in which only the user files are backed up?

So that people can only back up their user files if they so choose...

Is there any disadvantage to backing up all files (as opposed to just the user files)- other than it taking more space on the external HD?

None at all: it's what I'd suggest.

Advantage of Backing Up Just User Files

One advantage of backing up just user files (or even a subset of user files) is limited space on an external drive. For example, my backup strategy is to do a Monday through Saturday nightly backup to one partition and a once a week Sunday night backup to a second partition. With a 160 GB main drive, even a 250 GB external drive doesn't have room for two full clones. So I set up one partition large enough for a full clone (the weekly one) and the second partition large enough for just my main user. That way, I always have a current nightly backup and a second backup that is between 1 day and 1 week behind.
