Question about backups...

I am looking into purchasing Super Duper but it looks like the options to copy will ERASE and then COPY for the initial backup and subsequent "smart" updates.

I have my entire music collection (over 200 CDs) manually backed up to Apple Lossless format on my external (bootable) firewire drive. I do NOT want to move this over to my iMac before EVERY backup, even the first.

Is there a way to have Super Duper backup (regardless of the type) WITHOUT doing a full erase of my external FW drive!?

Apple's backup program let's me backup to a folder on the FW drive (labeled "Backups").

Sure, back up to a disk image, stored on your external FW drive. SD! makes tis easy.

Many advantages. You can then copy this image to other drives either locally or over the net.

Syzygies is correct, but another option is to partition your drive into a "backup" and "data" partition, keeping the two uses separate. That would allow you to write directly to the drive, and thus you could boot directly from the backup as well.

The User's Guide (in the Help menu) goes into the various options in some detail. The relevant section is linked right off the first page -- Storing a backup alongside other files on a destination drive.

Hope that helps!
