SD side-by-side with TM...on partition?

The notes about 2.5 say you can save your bootable SD backup side-by-side on one volume with a TM backup. I took that to mean on one unpartitioned volume.

But, the FAQ here mentioned assuming proper partitioning... So, does the bootable SD still need to be partitioned from the TM backup?

I've been using SD to do nightly OS and data Smart Updates, which has worked great. I have run into the issue of wishing I had a different version of my backup file, thus the desire to try TM.

So, should I just leave SD doing my bootable OS backup in its current partition and switch to TM do it the data backup to the other partition?

"Proper partitioning" means the partition scheme needs to be correct for the Mac you're dealing with. It doesn't mean you have to have more than one partition... it just means the partition scheme should be "GUID" for an Intel Mac, or "Apple Partition Map" for a Power PC Mac.

consolidate then?

Ok. So, would there be a benefit to me totally erasing the Firewire drive and setting it to one partition and then doing the TM data backup and follow with a SuperDuper bootable OS backup? I would likely gain a little extra space for data that way.

No: in general I suggest having separate partitions if you can do so.
